Montana Learning Center Opens Its Observatories to the Public for Eight Stargazing Nights in 2026

See the Wonders of Big Sky Country After Dark 

HELENA, Mont. — For eight nights in 2026, Montana Learning Center at Canyon Ferry Lake (MLC) will open its world-class astronomical park to the public for Beyond the Big Sky, an unparalleled opportunity to see Montana’s night sky as you’ve never seen it before and explore the universe through some of the state’s most powerful publicly accessible telescopes.

These are the only dates all year when MLC’s observatories are open to the general public.

Held one weekend each month from June through September on the shores of Canyon Ferry Lake, Beyond the Big Sky pairs engaging astronomy talks with guided night-sky viewing led by MLC staff and volunteers from the Helena Astronomical Society. Each evening is part science, part storytelling, and part Montana magic.

The 2026 lineup includes:

June 19–20: James Manning — Native Skies, Native Stories
Astronomy, culture, and storytelling under Montana’s summer sky.

July 17–18: Peter Detterline — A Date with the Moon and Venus
An interactive look at two of Earth’s most captivating neighbors.

August 7–8: Dr. Chani Nava — Searching for Other Earths

A journey into exoplanets and the search for distant worlds.

September 18–19: Dr. Kelly Cline — Mysteries of the Moon

A look at the Moon’s past, present, and possible future.

“Beyond the Big Sky is one of the most extraordinary experiences we offer,” said Ryan Hannahoe, MLC’s Executive Director. “For these few nights only, the public can step inside our observatories, meet renowned astronomy experts, and see the universe in a way most people never get to experience.”

With only 100 tickets available per night, these evenings are designed to feel intimate, immersive, and amazing.
